On October 1st, 2025, the United States government entered a shutdown after an impasse over the federal budget. Not only does this impact government officials in D.C., but all national services across the country, including the National Parks system. With over 50 TRACK Trails located on federal land, what does this mean for Kids in Parks?
Due to this shutdown, the National Park Service will furlough more than half of its workforce, but many parks will remain partially open with limited staff and services. Park roads, overlooks, trails, and open-air memorials located in non-restricted/gated areas will stay open to visitors (see Contingency Plan). Many of the facilities and buildings that were locked on the night of September 30th will remain closed to the public for the duration of the shutdown.
Each of our TRACK Trail sites will be affected differently depending on park resources and funding. For example, travelers to the Blue Ridge Parkway can still drive the scenic motor road and enjoy a hike, picnic, or camping trip on the grounds. If you choose to visit a national park site, staff may not be present and visitor services, like permits, educational programs, trash collection, road/trail maintenance, and restrooms, may not be available. Please be respectful of the land, especially with minimal staffing, and do your part to keep the park clean by practicing the Leave No Trace Principles.
The Kids in Parks program itself will not be impacted by the shutdown. KIP participants should plan ahead for TRACK Trail adventures located on national property and check with the specific park for further restrictions or closures. While visiting these national sites, we encourage everyone to explore the surrounding restaurants, shops, and more to support the local economies of these communities.
Thank you in advance for taking care of your national parks and recreating responsibly! As we learn more details, we will keep you updated.
