Two New NC State Parks Trails Opened May 11

Saturday, May 11, 2013 - 3:00pm

On Saturday, May 11, we will be celebrating the grand openings of two new North Carolina State Park TRACK Trails.

The Hanging Rock State ParkTRACK Trail Grand Opening will be at 10AM by the main visitor center. The 0.6 mile trail features a cascading waterfall and a rock garden. Please join us for a ribbon cutting ceremony and guided walk through the woods. Hanging Rock State Park superintendent Robin Kalish said, “This is one of many partnerships that Hanging Rock will be forging with other groups to make outdoor experiences better for our visitors. We want to have something great for every type of park user, especially kids! This trail showcases everything great about Hanging Rock- waterfalls, rock formations, mountain flora, beautiful views, healthful activity in an inspiring setting, and learning while having fun –it doesn’t get any better!”

The Mayo River State Park TRACK Trail Grand Opening will be at 1PM. The trailhead is east of the large stone picnic shelter. This trail is a flat, 0.5 mile loop through the woods. Please join us for a ribbon cutting ceremony and ranger-led guided walk.  May 11th is also the Mayo River State Park Community Fishing Day! There will be a kids fishing derby for kids 15 and under, with prizes for heaviest, longest, and shortest fish in different age catagories. One single prize will be awarded to the adult who catches the heaviest fish of the day. Besides fishing, they will have bluegrass music, a crafts booth for children, casting games with prizes, and some displays including Rockingham County history, local recreation, and emergency medical services.
