On June 8, 2013, Kids in Parks and North Carolina’s state park system will celebrate National Get Outdoors Day with the grand opening of two new TRACK Trails at Morrow Mountain State Park near Albemarle, N.C. and Lake Norman State Park near Statesville. These trails will make a total of ten in partnership with the N.C. Division of Parks and Recreation, adding to other state park TRACK Trail locations such as Chimney Rock, New River and Hanging Rock.
The Morrow Mountain State Park TRACK Trail will be located on the park’s 0.6-mile Quarry Trail, which features scenic stream crossings and an old quarry where stones were collected in the 1930s to build many of the park’s historic structures.
The Lake Norman State Park TRACK Trail follows the Lakeshore Trail, a beautiful 2.5-mile loop along the edge of Lake Norman with hidden beaches and Osprey soaring overhead.
"We owe both the Blue Ridge Parkway and Morrow Mountain State Park to the hard work of the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and 1940s. Now 75 years later, it's neat to see these two great places linked again by a partnership that gets kids outdoors," said Sean Higgins, North Carolina State Parks Interpretation and Education Manager.
Greg Schneider, Superintendent of Morrow Mountain State Park, said of the partnership, “The staff at Morrow Mountain is excited to partner with the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation’s Kids in Parks program to become the ninth N.C. State Park to have a Track Trail. It is great to see kids out in our parks and this trail will make their experience more exciting and educational.”
Jarid Church, Lake Norman State Park Ranger, said, “The staff at Lake Norman is excited to partner with the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation’s Kids in Parks program and join the network of North Carolina State Parks with Track Trails. It is great to see kids visiting the largest lake in North Carolina, and this trail will make their experience more exciting and educational.”
