On June 3, 2013, Kids in Parks and North Carolina’s state park system will celebrate the Grand Opening of the TRACK Trail at Lake James State Park near Nebo, NC. The TRACK Trail at Lake James has been open since the fall, but the Grand Opening ceremony will be held in conjunction with the unveiling of the park’s revamped Holly Discovery Trail, a hands-on educational trail designed especially for kids. Kids in Parks currently has eight trails in partnership with the N.C. Division of Parks and Recreation, adding to other NC State Park TRACK Trail locations such as Chimney Rock, New River and Hanging Rock.
Nora Coffey, Superintendent of Lake James State Park, said of the partnership, “The staff at Lake James is excited to partner with the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation’s Kids in Parks program and join the network of North Carolina State Parks with Track Trails. It is great to see kids out in our parks and this trail will make their experience more exciting and educational.”
Tony Geiger, Program Manager for Kids in Parks, said, “The great thing about the Lake James State Park TRACK Trail is that it highlights the area’s natural resources as well as cultural resources such as the Overmountain Victory Trail.”
The grand opening celebration of the Lake James State Park TRACK Trail will be held on Monday, June 3rd, at the bridge parking lot of the Paddy’s Creek Area in Lake James State Park. The ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at 10:00am and will be followed ranger-guided hikes along the Holly Discovery Trail. We will be joined by the 3rd grade class of Marion Elementary School.
